This is without doubt, one of my favourite stamp sets. The artwork is primitive, completely incomprehsible and unidentifiable on some stamps, and the scientific names are in a few places way off the mark - the Puff adder has been Bitis arietans for ever, only occasion authors used Bitis lachesis up to 1955, but this does not deflect from the beauty of this set of twelve stamps. They were also issued as a stamp pack which is also extremely collectable.

An attractive stamp set but with a flaw, the gaboon viper illustrated is clearly the East African gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica) rather than the species present in West African, the West African gaboon viper (Bitis rhinoceros) and even when these stamps were issued the two were treated as distinct subspecies with easily identifiable differences. The West African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus sp.) cannot be named specificially as the species has been split into three distinct species and the West African species is currently without a name.

Four attractive snake stamps and an accompanying minisheet showing a Forest twigsnake (Thelotornis kirtlandii) harassing a sun-bird, yet birds have never been authentically recorded in the diet of this species, despite the occasional alternative name of 'bird snake'. The other tree stamps are interesting studies of the species portrayed.

One snake, on lizard, one turtle and one crocodile. Set that sums up the Reptilia, although the portuguese names do not help much since 'jiboia' means Boa constrictor, a boa, not a python.

A series of six frog stamps, although seemingly not Guinea-Bissau species.
