A series of four stamps commemorating the Bicentenary of Captain Cook's Voyages, the 20c of which shows a Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) with the additional caption "caught by Captain Cook's crew on Christmas Island for nourishment." Turtles and tortoises could survive for long periods on board ship and provided easy meat for starving merchant navies and navies of all nations, leading to declines in local populations, especially of giant tortoises in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
