DILI, DILI DISTRICT, TIMOR-LESTE

TIMOR-LESTE REPTILE & AMPHIBIAN SURVEY
PHASE V: BEST LAID PLANS ...

of mice and men, as the saying goes.

In other words not everything on expeditions goes to schedule, and this was the case with ours.

There was essential admin to be sorted out on the 20th so we delayed our departure until the following day. The upside of this meant it gave us more time to purchase supplies and sort equipment. It also gave us a chance to go into Dili, familiar ground for some of us, but a whole new experience for others on the team.

There was a US Navy ship in the bay, moored between Ataúro Island (see phases II & IV) and Cristo Rei (see Phase IV). We watched as it launched helicopters, one of which had overflown us on the Comoro River the previous day. According to the Jets (our Timorese colleagues), this is a medical vessel bringing aid to Timor-Leste.

Tomorrow we definitely depart for Lautém District, the eastern-most district of Timor-Leste, a distict we have not visited since Phase I in 2oo9. We plan to spend approximately a week in several promising locations in Lautém.
