TIMOR-LESTE (Lautem Distr.)

TIMOR-LESTE REPTILE & AMPHIBIAN SURVEY
INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Today was likely to be a long day and so it proved to be. We broke camp and packed to leave around 08:00 and drove west to Baucau, a journey of only 75 km but given the roads it took 2-3 hours. We stopped briefly at every bridge and checked for Saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) and sighted one specimen, about 2.0 m in length, lurking in a deep pool.

At Baucau we discovered the old ruined Portuguese market had been completely refurbished and given a new lease on life. This is an iconic building but on previous visits to Baucau it has looked very sad and unloved, but no more, it even proudly flew the Timorese flag. We sought out the TelkomCel office to use the internet to upload this blog and check email for the first time since we had left Dili. While I was so occupied Hinrich and the others shopped for supplies.
