TIMOR-LESTE (Lautem Distr.)

Eventually, we reached Soibada and found accomodation at the guest house attached to the church and school. According to Laca, the Catholic school at Soibada was one of the best in East Timor during Portuguese times. Although isolated in the mountains, it was attended by three of Timor-Leste's former Presidents: Nicolau Lobato, José Ramos-Horta, and Xanana Gusmão (the current prime minister), as well as others amongst today's leadership.

High on the hill overlooking Soibada was a church built into a gap in the rocks, apparently a site of pilgrimage.

There was a lot of interesting habitat around Soibada for us to herp, abandoned buildings, rocky outcrops, overgrown bush. We planned to stay two nights giving us a full day and two evenings to herp.
