Dili, Dili District

The Timor Lodge Hotel is not only handy for the airport, it is also very handy for getting into Dili town for shopping or sight-seeing excursions, using either taxis or our hired "troopies".

This was useful because despite it being our plan to leave Dili on the 20th July, there was essential admin to be sorted out on that day so we delayed our departure until the 21st. The upside of this meant it gave us more time to purchase supplies and sort equipment. It also gave us a chance to go into Dili, familiar ground for some of us, but a whole new experience for others on the team.

There was a US Navy ship in the bay, moored between Ataúro Island (see Phase II & Phase IV) and Cristo Rei (see Phase IV). We watched as it launched helicopters, one of which had overflown us on the Comoro River the previous day. The Jets told us this is a medical vessel bringing aid to Timor-Leste.
