FISH FIELDWORK

The INPA fish teams from Manaus recorded many new species from the rivers, creeks and pools around Ilha Maracá, but many expedition members also engaged in fishing expeditions to suppliment the monotony of our diet. Piranha are a particularly good eating-fish (no pun intended).

Even freshwater stingrays have enemies.

Red piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri,
abound in the channels around Ilha Maracá.
In the dry season they can be a danger
(see Hazards)

This long-toothed Payara,
Hydrolychus armatus,
is actually fairly harmless.
