RHYNCHOCEPHALIA
BEAKED REPTILES

The two species of tuataras are the sole survivors of the Rhynchocephalia, the beaked reptiles, a group once widespread around the world but which are now considered living dinosaurs being confined to remote islands off the coast of New Zealand. The Rynchocephalia is treated as the sister taxa to the Squamata which contains some 6,000 species of lizards, amphisbaenians and snakes. The photo library only contains photographs of captive Australian specimens of the best known species.

IGUANIA
AGAMAS, CHAMELEONS & IGUANAS


The Iguania is split into two main groups based on the dentition of its members. The teeth of the Acrodonts (agamas and chameleons) are located on the tops of the jaw-bones which the Pleurodonts (iguanas and their allies) have their teeth on the sides of the jaws. The Agamidae contains six subfamilies, 55 genera and over 380 species the Chamaeleonidae contains two subfamilies, nine genera and 185 species, which the Iguanidae contains 11 subfamilies, 56 genera and over 950 species. The photo library contains 48 agamid species from 23 genera representing five subfamilies; eleven chameleon species from five genera from both subfamilies, and 61 iguanid species (65 taxa), from 26 genera and seven subfamilies.

Legend:
Photographic locality. Wherever possible precidence is given to wild specimens from known localitions, wherein the 'photographic locality' relates to the origin of the photographed specimens, rather than the taxon's entire range. The only exceptions are indicated by (captive) or (preserved specimen). These are either specimens photographed in captivity, where the locality given is a general distribution for the taxon, or preserved specimens photographed as biological voucher specimens.

Column D1. Digitized images - the bulk of the library consists of 35mm transparencies (mostly Kodachrome or Velvia) which are gradually being digitized [using Nikon CoolScan 4000 or Plustek OpticFilm 7600i] and stored on hard disc.
