PAPUA NEW GUINEA (Central Province)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SNAKEBITE PROJECT
RESUPPLY

Today was resupply day! Dave was due to come out from Port Moresby with various much needed supplies that were running low or were exhausted, such as fuel, bread, batteries, Aerogard. He was also supposed to be accompanied by another member of the field team, Julious, but he was a no-show. Also coming for a look-see were two of the medical team, the paediatrician Lydia So and Roseanne Power, one of the students. Their ETA was around 11:30.

Jasper took off early towards Edevu. Owen, Ben and I set out later in much the same direction but I ended up on the top road without Owen and Ben so I headed for Edevu too, stopping to photograph a pair of extremely noisy Sulphur-crested ockatoos (Cacatau galerita).

Eventually I spotted Jasper in the distance and, catching him up, learned he had missed a large Slatey-grey snake (Stegonotus cucullatus) not far from where we had caught the large specimen two nights previously. We herped our way towards Edevu, crossing the river and entering the village, where we sought out the Chinese store and bought some cold beer. We sat in the entrance and drank a beer each while talking to the locals, before starting back towards our encampment.
