PAPUA NEW GUINEA (Oro Province)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SNAKEBITE PROJECT
BROWNSNAKE HUNT

In the evening, around 19:30, we went spot-lighting on the main highway, Hayward driving, Owen and me bailing out for snakes. We saw three, all dead. The first was a medium-sized Southern white-lipped python (Leiopython hoserae), the second a Common treesnake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus), the third a Bevel-nosed boa (Candoia paulsoni mcdowelli). I examined all these DOR (dead-on-road) specimens and only the last of these was a genuine "road-kill", all the others, like the small-eyed snake in the morning, showed signs of having being killed elsewhere and thrown onto the road. So a five snake day, four dead, one escaped, tomorrow has to be more successful. Late to bed, a trend that would continue.
