PHASE IV: DUE SOUTH cont.

The night we arrived we explored the convent compound and collected four species of amphibians: the ubiquitous Black-spined toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus); the Striped treefrog (Polypedates cf. leucomystax); the Rice paddy frog (Fejervarya sp.), and a new species for the project, a Pumpkin frog (Kaloula sp.). The precise identity of the last species is particularly interesting since the genus was not previously recorded from Timor Island but two species are known from the Inner Banda Arc from Bali to Flores, and Banda which shares the Outer Banda Arc with Timor.

The convent also had a small Reticulated python (Broghammerus reticulatus) which had lived for three years in an oil drum, being fed occasionally on a rat, one of which had recently been consumed, judging by the bulge in its belly.
