BEING A TOURIST

Today I did something I do not usually do, I became a tourist and toured Oahu, in the hospitable company of Pumehana Imada, the Bishop Museum Collections Manager, and her botanist husband Clive. We visited a number of scenic locations around Oahu including Makapu'u, the Pali Lookout (very very windy), the eastern end of Waikiki, and the Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific where many of the Hawaiian war dead are buried from World War Two, Korea and Vietnam. This last was of particular interest to me as I have a great interest in WWII and have visited battlefields and war memorials from the UK to PNG to Guam. I think it important that the sacrifice made by the servicemen and women be remembered and commemorated and this year (2014) being the 100th anniversary of the Great War* and the 60th anniversary of D Day, makes is so much more poignant.

* The First Wirld War was not known as the First World War until there was a Second World War, until then it was the Great War.

At the end Pu and I went back to the Bishop Museum where she had some more snakes for me to look over and identify. I have had a wonderful time at the Bishop Museum and hope to return another day.
