TIMOR-LESTE (Lautem Distr.)

TIMOR-LESTE REPTILE & AMPHIBIAN SURVEY
WHEN THE CAT'S AT COM
(AND THE MICE ARE AT RAÇA)

Sven and Laca had an idea! What if they took the four students up to Laca's study site near his village, Raça, to camp overnight and herp by both day and night, and what if they did this as a group without the professors along? They brought this concept to us and we agreed it would be a worthwhile exercise. So this morning we drove the two troopies to Raça and dropped the six of them off with tents, field kit and supplies for 24 hours. Food would not be a problem as Laca's family would assist them. I left my troopie in the village in case of an emergency and gave Sven the key. We also had good communications via Laca's cell phone. They were set, so Hinrich and I headed back to Com.

On the way we passed the Raça ossuary. This is where the bones of the heroes and martyrs of the sttruggle for freedom are interred. We have seen an identical ossuary in Liquiça and there are probably others considering 150,000-200,000 Timorese died for the freedom of their land.

Back at Com Hinrich and I settled into the office to do some work on some papers we are co-authoring and update the Expedition Field Notes blog.

Mark and Hinrich working in the office,
It's a hard life!
