AITUTAKI

Aitutaki, aka Ara'ura or Utataki, was under British protection from 1888 until its annexation by
New Zealand in 1901. The island is one of the Cook Islands, which are closely associated with New Zealand. From 1892-1903 Cook Islands stamps were used, then overprinted New Zealand stamps until 1932, when Cook Islands stamps were again used.
In 1972 Aitutaki established its own post office and began issuing stamps aimed at the collectors' market.
To date only a single stamp issue has been produced featuring herpetological subjects.
