FAMILIES BEGINNING WITH A-H

The Anura or Salienta is the largest suborder of the Amphibia containing all the "tailless amphibians", the frogs and toads, although all of them have tails in their larval form and some retain a tail into adulthood.

The list below is based on American Museum of Natural History Amphibian Species of the World
Online Reference version 5.4.
The common names for families are adopted from the AMNH list with additional proposed names in inverted commas.
New species are being described on a regular basis so the species counts will increase continually.

Note: due to the confusion over the higher level phylogeny of the Anura the families represented in the O'Shea photo library are listed in alphabetical rather than systematic order. This page contains those families beginning with A, up to H.
Note: these list may be incomplete as there are many anuran slides from earlier expeditions which remain to be catalogued.

Legend:
Photographic locality. Wherever possible precidence is given to wild specimens from known localitions, wherein the 'photographic locality' relates to the origin of the photographed specimens, rather than the taxon's entire range. The only exceptions are indicated by (captive) or (preserved specimen). These are either specimens photographed in captivity, where the locality given is a general distribution for the taxon, or preserved specimens photographed as biological voucher specimens.

Column D1. Digitized images - the bulk of the library consists of 35mm transparencies (mostly Kodachrome or Velvia) which are gradually being digitized [using Nikon CoolScan 4000 or Plustek OpticFilm 7600i] and stored on hard disc. 'X' indicates that digitized images are available, '[]' indicates that the transparencies of this taxon have yet to be digitized.

Column D2. Digital images - since 2005 digital images have also been taken [using Canon EOS 30D, 40D or 7D]. 'X' indicates that digital images are available in addition to digitized images for this taxon.

ROCKET FROGS

The Aromobatidae, some subfamilies of which were formerly contained with the Dendrobatidae, comprises three subfamilies, containing a single genus of 46 species, two genera and 26 species, and two genera of 31 species respectively, a total of 104 species. The O'Shea library contains one genus from each subfamily and a total of four species.

ARTHROLEPTIDAE

The Arthroleptidae comprises one subfamily with seven genera and 89 species, and another monotypic subfamily with 51 species, a total of 140 species. Both subfamilies are represented in the O'Shea library, by a pair of genera and eight species.

The Bombinatoridae contains two genera and eight species, represented in the library by two species from the same genus (three taxa).

The Bufonidae contains 48 genera and 558 species distributed worldwide, the O'Shea library contains 18 genera, 39 species (41 taxa) from all continents where they occur.

The Ceratophryidae comprises 86 species, spread between three subfamilies of two genera, 14 species, three genera, 12 species, and a single genus of 60 species, but the O'Shea library only contains two species from two genera.

The Dendrobatidae contains three subfamilies, comprising four genera and 61 species, seven genera and 58 species, and a single genus containing 58 species respectively, a total of 179 species. The O'Shea library contains seven species, from three genera in the single subfamily.

DICROGLOSSIDAE
"PADDIFIELD FROGS & THEIR ALLIES"

Formerly contained with the Ranidae, the Dicroglossidae contains two subfamilies, comprising 12 genera, with 149 species, and two genera, with 22 species. The library contains representatives of both subfamilies, 15 species in five genera in one and a single species in the other.

SOUTH AMERICAN FROGS

The Eleutherodactylidae contains at least 205 species in two subfamilies. Specimens were photographed, on film, in Honduras, Costa Rica and Cuba but these are currently unidentified and are not included in this database.

The Hemiphractidae contains five genera and 94 species, but is represented in the library by two species.

HYLIDAE
TREEFROGS

The worldwide treefrog family Hylidae contains three subfamilies. The Hylinae is the largest with 40 genera and 646 species, the monotypic Pelodryadinae contains 197 species, while the Phyllomedusinae contains five genera and 58 species, making a total of 901 species. The O'Shea photo library contains representatives of all three subfamilies, ie. 12 genera and 28 species, 21 species from the monotypic Litoria, and three genera and six species respectively.
