RETICULATED PYTHON Python reticulatus
The Longest Snake in the World
The reticulated python is the longest snake in the world with a record specimen form Indonesia in the early 20th Century that was 10.0m long. It is one of the few snake species capable of devouring a human and several instances are on record.
Normal prey ranges from rats to goats, deer and even a leopard and a young sun-bear. It is a powerful constrictor and kills by constricting its prey, its bite is bloody but nonvenomous. Its wide range was recently extended by Mark O'Shea and Skip Lazell who recorded the species on remote Itbayat island in the far north Philippines, closer to Taiwan than Luzon. In Thailand we also observed some interesting sleeping and escape behavior.
