"The Pilbara Cobra"

Perth, Western Australia

Perth is the fourth largest city in Australia with a metropolitan population of over 1.7 million (71% ofthe entire population of Western Australia). It is located in the southwestern corner of the state. It became known as the "City of Light" after residents switched on their house lights to signal to the astronauts in Friendship 7 in 1962 and again to the Space Shuttle in 1998. It is also considered the 9th "most liveable city" in the world.

We stayed in Perth for two days, equiping the expedition not only for the Pilbara phase of the shoot, but also the Kimberley phase which would follow immediately afterwards. We met with the Perth based herpetologist Magnus Peterson who had assisted Associate Producer Robert Pendlebury on the recce, and who I knew from the 2nd World Congress of Herpetology in Adelaide in 1993/94, and we also met with Dr Ann Ward who would be our medical officer in the remote Kimberley region.

From Perth we flew to Port Hedland, 1636 km and 2 hours flying time north, on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia.
