"Crocodile Canyon"

Back to Nouakchott, Mauritania

Route back to Nouakchott

When we left Matmâta we drove back down to the straight road out of Moudjéria and at a suitable point with good visibility for several kilometres in either direction we stopped the vehicles and awaited the light aircraft.

When it appeared we parked a vehicle across the road 1km back towards Moudjéria and 1km towards Aleg so that the aircraft could use the road as a runway. There was a bush airstrip in the desert to the south but the road was a much smoother landing strip.

The aircraft with cameraman Mark Stokes, AP Amy, sound-man Terry and me aboard, then took off again and circled Matmâta, Oued El Glat, Hartéga Guelta, Lim Sherba, El Housseînîya and Lake Bourâgga where we had filmed so that we could obtain aerial footage and stills images. We even sighted one crocodile from the air.

We then flew on to Nouakchott, passing our convoy enroute.

From Nouakchott we flew home.
