Reptilia: Turtles & Tortoises

Two chelonians were recorded during the survey, a turtle from the African and Australian side-necked turtle family Pelomedusidae, and tortoise from the Testudinidae.

Pelomedusidae:

Pelomedusa subrufa subrufa - Marsh terrapin
An extremely widespread African species found in numerous water-courses across the reserve, in dams and waterholes. Specimens were captured at at Roland's Pos (location O).

Testudinidae:

Geochelone pardalis babcocki - Leopard tortoise
A large pan-African tortoise that cane achieve a carapace length of 700mm and a weight of 40kg. An adult was found in the open, on the move near Sonop Old Reservoir (location P) and a juvenile was discovered sheltering under a rock leaning against a mopane tree, near Mopane Dam (location J).

Juvenile leopard tortoise found sheltering under the large rock leaning against the mopane tree.
Replaced there after photography.
